Lyon have announced that centre-back Clinton Mata (32) has signed a new deal with Les Gones. The Angola international centre-back, who can also fill in as right-back is now tied with the Ligue 1 side over a contract set to expire in 2028. Mata had entered his final contract year. The former KAS Eupen youth product was one of the most dependable defenders at Lyon last season and he has been rewarded accordingly.

Mata joined Lyon from Club Brugge two years ago over a €5m deal. He featured 73 times for Les Gones. Lyon signed Casa Pia centre-back Ruben Kluivert this summer, so both Mata and Moussa Niakhaté will have to fight for their place in Paulo Fonseca’s starting XI. “Solid on the pitch, valuable off it, he has also established himself as a benchmark for the younger players, embodying the values of rigor and high standards expected at this level.”, Lyon write in their statement. Mata’s Lyon will kick their Ligue 1 season off this Saturday away at Lens.
