Odysseas Vlachodimos set to join Sevilla

Newcastle United goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos is reportedly on the cusp of joining La Liga club Sevilla on a season-long loan deal in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Odysseas Vlachodimos is the subject of interest from Sevilla. The Andalusian giants have been eager to bolster their first-team squad by signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. So, the 31-year-old Newcastle United outcast has been a target for Los Nervionenses.

The out-of-favour goalkeeper is on the cusp of moving to La Liga in the summer transfer window, with Sevilla striking an agreement over a season-long loan deal with a purchase option. Vlachodimos will aim to put his Newcastle United frustrations behind him by becoming the first-choice goalkeeper for the Spanish club.

Odysseas Vlachodimos and his Premier League woes

Odysseas Vlachodimos has barely managed any game time since joining Newcastle United from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth €24 million last summer. The experienced goalkeeper’s Premier League misery has continued, as he was a peripheral figure for Nottingham Forest before he moved to St. James’ Park. The 31-year-old has only one appearance thus far for the Magpies.

The Greek international is understandably keen on joining a club that can provide him with regular game time, and that may have come his way. The latest opportunity will come from Spain, with La Liga club Sevilla on the cusp of signing Vlachodimos from Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

La Liga move on the horizon

Sevilla’s interest in Odysseas Vlachodimos makes sense. The Andalusian giants have been scouring the market for a goalkeeper this summer as Matias Almeyda wants a new option between the sticks in the 2025/26 season. With Orjan Nyland on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the twilight of his career, Sevilla needed a new shot-stopper this summer.

Several candidates, including Karl Hein, emerged on Sevilla’s radar, and recent reports suggested a deal was close. However, with Hein recently emerging as a target for Rangers, Los Nervionenses looked elsewhere, with Vlachodimos emerging as a viable alternative. The experienced shot-stopper is on the verge of moving to La Liga, with Sevilla striking an agreement over a loan deal.

Recent reports suggested Sevilla would ask Newcastle United to cover part of Vlachodimos’s wages. While it is unclear if that will happen, the 31-year-old Greek international will attempt to resurrect his stuttering fortunes when he moves to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on loan in the coming days.
