Lesley Ugochukwu set to join Burnley in £20 million-plus deal

Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu is reportedly on the verge of joining newly promoted Premier League club Burnley in a deal worth over £20 million this summer.

According to an update by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Lesley Ugochukwu has been the subject of interest from Burnley. The Clarets have been keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a versatile midfielder in the summer transfer window. So, the Chelsea flop has been a target for the newly promoted Premier League club.

Chelsea and Burnley have found a common ground on the transfer fee, with Fabrizio Romano suggesting on Instagram that the 2024/25 EFL Championship runners-up will cough up over £20 million to secure his services. Meanwhile, the reliable David Ornstein has revealed that the French midfielder will sign a five-year contract when he moves to Turf Moor.

Lesley Ugochukwu and his struggles

Lesley Ugochukwu has hit a brick wall since joining Chelsea from Stade Rennais in a deal worth £23 million in August 2023. The 21-year-old barely featured for the West London club in his debut season before embarking on a season-long loan spell with Southampton last summer. However, the youngster was in and out of the starting lineup throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

Meanwhile, the French midfield prospect has managed only 567 minutes of game time across 15 outings thus far for Chelsea, and he might have played his final match for the West London club. The Blues have been ready to part ways with Ugochukwu for a fee of around £20 million this summer, and his next destination will be Burnley.

Another move across the Premier League beckons

Burnley’s interest in Lesley Ugochukwu makes sense. The Clarets have been active in the market during the summer transfer window, with ten players moving to Turf Moor. However, the 2024/25 EFL Championship runners-up have yet to sign a midfielder despite losing the in-demand Josh Brownhill as a free agent.

Ugochukwu thus emerged as a viable target for Burnley, with the newly promoted Premier League club striking an agreement with Chelsea over a deal worth over £20 million. Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Frenchman will sign a five-year contract when he moves to Turf Moor, and he will undergo his medical tests this week.

Ugochukwu will reunite with Armando Broja at Burnley, with the Albanian international also on the cusp of moving to Turf Moor in a deal worth around £20 million. It will be interesting to see if the French midfield prospect can resurrect his fortunes at the newly promoted Premier League club.
