Newcastle United line up €70 million move for Oihan Sancet
Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Oihan Sancet and willing to table a €70 million offer for the Athletic Club star.
According to Fichajes, Oihan Sancet is the subject of a €70 million offer from Newcastle United. The Premier League side are aiming to convince Athletic Club to part ways with their homegrown talent, although there are some challenges ahead to lure the Spaniard away from the Basque side.
Oihan Sancet had a tremendous season and cemented his importance on Ernesto Valverde’s side. The attacking midfielder scored or assisted 20 times across all competitions, and Athletic Club valued him highly enough to consider him a key part of their plans moving forward.
Sancet had big interest from some of the Premier League teams, as Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Manchester United were all keen earlier in the window. However, Athletic Club are protected by a long-term contract that lasts until 2032, which will put them in a strong position when it comes to negotiating for his transfer.
Newcastle United are the latest to keep tabs on the 20 G/A playmaker, with Eddie Howe angling a move for a. player who could facilitate play in the final third. Sancet might be an attacking midfielder by trade, but last season showed he’s more involved in scoring goals rather than creating them.
He will certainly bring a different dimension to Howe’s style of play, as Newcastle United are reportedly ready to pay €70 million to sign him. Athletic Club could point them towards his €80 million release clause as per the report, as Valverde or the club may see no reason to sell Sancet at this stage of their project, as there could be the potential to offer him fresh terms with higher pay.
Newcastle United want to sign key targets
The Magpies are embroiled in the Alexander Isak saga, with a resolution likely to be reached at some stage of this window. However, Newcastle United have suffered big rejections from top targets this summer, and they are still eager to sign some top-rated stars to strengthen their squad. Benjamin Sesko is a priority target, as the Slovenian could potentially replace Isak if the Swede ends up leaving.
As for the Sancet chase, the idea is to bring in an attacking midfielder who could play behind the front three. There were links to Harvey Elliott, and the Liverpool star could still feature on their list as he could leave the Merseysiders and join a club with Champions League football. If the Magpies fail with a move for Sancet, they could pursue Elliott as an alternative.
