Everton, Leeds United in transfer tussle to sign Josh Brownhill

Everton and Leeds United are reportedly keen on sealing a Bosman move for 29-year-old English midfielder Josh Brownhill in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Give Me Sport, Everton and Leeds United are interested in Josh Brownhill. The 29-year-old has become a free agent after leaving newly promoted Premier League club Brunley as a free agent. The two top-flight clubs are eager to keep the player in England amid his links with MLS outfit Toronto FC.

Josh Brownhill and his career so far

Josh Brownhill has become an attractive target for several clubs after helping Burnley secure automatic promotion to the Premier League and leaving the Clarets as a free agent. A native of Warrington, the Englishman spent his formative years in his homeland, passing through the academies at Warrington Town and Manchester United before graduating from the youth division at Preston North End.

The 29-year-old rose in prominence after joining Burnley from Bristol City in January 2020, and he has made considerable progress in the last half a decade. While Brownhill was a dependable performer in the middle of the park for the Clarets, his stock soared after he became the club captain in the wake of Jack Cork’s departure from Turf Moor.

The English midfielder was exceptional in the 2024/25 season, playing an instrumental role in Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League. He contributed to 25 goals in 42 EFL Championship outings by finding the back of the net 18 times and providing six assists. However, Brownhill’s spell with the Clarets has ended, as he wants to embark on a new adventure, with the situation capturing the attention of several well-known clubs, including Everton and Leeds United.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Everton’s interest in Josh Brownhill is understandable. The Toffees are scouring the market for a midfielder this summer after parting ways with Abdoulaye Doucoure as a free agent. Additionally, Idrissa Gueye is in the twilight of his career. Several candidates, including Douglas Luiz, have emerged on Everton’s radar, with Brownhill also a viable target for the Merseyside outfit.

As for Leeds United, the Whites have already reinforced their midfield unit by signing Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff. However, Daniel Farke wants more options for the middle of the park, and recent reports have linked the newly promoted Premier League club with several midfielders, including Florentino Luis. However, Brownhill is also an option worth considering for Leeds United.

Brownhill is also a target for Toronto FC, but Everton and Leeds United hope to keep the 29-year-old midfielder in England beyond the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see if the Englishman joins a Premier League club in a Bosman move in the coming weeks.
