West Ham United fail with bid to sign John Victor

Premier League club West Ham United’s €8 million bid to sign Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor has been turned down.

According to a report from Globo Esporte, West Ham United have failed in an attempt to sign John Victor. The Hammers are in the market for a new shot-stopper, and they submitted a bid worth €8 million for the Botafogo star. However, the offer has been rejected by the Brazilian outfit.

John Victor joined Botafogo at the start of 2024 from Santos in a small-money deal. While he never really got an extended run in Santos’ first team, the switch has certainly helped his cause. He has featured in a total of 84 matches for them and has kept 36 clean sheets.

In 2024, he was named the best goalkeeper in both the Copa Libertadores and the Brasileirao as Botafogo clinched both those titles. He further enhanced his reputation with some exceptional performances at the Club World Cup this summer.

Multiple top clubs took note of his performances. Manchester United established contacts with their representatives to learn more about a potential transfer, while Everton have been closely monitoring him. While both clubs are keen on his signature, neither of them has made any formal moves to sign John Victor.

West Ham United’s opening bid turned down

West Ham United recently entered the race to sign John Victor from Botafogo. The Hammers already have Alphonse Areola in their ranks, but they want more competition in goal after parting ways with Lukasz Fabianski and consider the Brazilian an ideal fit for their project.

The Irons are the first club to knock on Botafogo’s door with a formal offer. The East London outfit went ahead and tabled a bid worth €8 million to sign the Brazilian goalkeeper, but the offer has been rejected.

With over three years remaining on the new deal he signed earlier this year, Botafogo are in no rush to let him go and certainly not on the cheap. The contract not only raised his wages but also increased an already substantial release clause. With the opening bid rejected, it remains to be seen whether West Ham will return with an improved offer in the near future.
