Manchester United increasingly unlikely to sign Morten Hjulmand
Manchester United will unlikely sign 26-year-old Danish international Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP in the summer transfer window due to his price.
According to a report by Duncan Castles on The Transfers Podcast, Morten Hjulmand is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are eager to bolster their first-team squad by signing a holding midfielder in the summer transfer window. So, the 26-year-old Sporting CP star has emerged as a target for the Premier League club.
However, Manchester United will unlikely sign the Dane in the summer transfer window due to Sporting CP’s asking price. The Primeira Liga champions want suitors to trigger the release clause worth €80 million in Hjulmand’s contract. The player wants to move to the Premier League, and his representatives believe €50 million would be a fair valuation.
Morten Hjulmand and his progress at Sporting CP
Morten Hjulmand has made considerable progress since joining Sporting CP from US Lecce in August 2023. The 26-year-old did not take long to find his feet at the Portuguese club, and he has embraced more responsibility with each passing month. He became the team’s captain under Ruben Amorim’s tutelage.
The Danish international has turned out nearly 100 times thus far for Sporting CP while chipping in with seven goals and six assists. Meanwhile, Hjulmand’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Manchester United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Will Hjulmand reunite with Ruben Amorim at Manchester United?
Manchester United’s interest in Morten Hjulmand makes sense. The Red Devils are combing the market for a holding midfielder this summer amid uncertainties surrounding Casemiro’s long-term future. In addition, Manuel Ugarte has blown hot and cold since joining Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, while Christian Eriksen is no longer at Old Trafford.
So, Hjulmand has emerged as a viable target, and reports a few months ago suggested that Ruben Amorim’s presence at Old Trafford may hand Manchester United an advantage in the battle for his signature. However, a summer move to Old Trafford may not see the light of day, with Sporting CP demanding €80 million, the value of his release clause, to part ways with the Dane.
However, Hjulmand’s representatives believe that €50 million would be the Sporting CP captain’s fair valuation. In addition, the 26-year-old Danish international is keen on moving to the Premier League this summer. However, a summer move will unlikely see the light of day if the Primeira Liga champions maintain their asking price of €80 million.
