Newcastle United fail with bid to sign Andriy Lunin

Newcastle United and Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing 26-year-old Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Caught Offside, Andriy Lunin is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. So, the 26-year-old Real Madrid stopper emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit.

However, the 2024/25 EFL Cup winners have failed with a bid to sign Real Madrid’s backup goalkeeper on loan. Meanwhile, Newcastle United will face stiff competition from Manchester United for Lunin’s signature. However, the player is content at Real Madrid, and the Merengues do not want to part ways with him in the summer transfer window.

Andriy Lunin and his career so far

Andriy Lunin has established himself as one of the most reliable backup goalkeepers in the world since joining Real Madrid from Zorya Luhansk in July 2018. While the 26-year-old has had to suffice with being Thibaut Courtois’s deputy in the last seven years, he has come leaps and bounds while making his mark in his sporadic appearances for the senior side.

The Ukrainian international has turned out 62 times thus far for Real Madrid while keeping 22 clean sheets and conceding 70 goals. However, Lunin’s situation has compelled many high-profile clubs to mull over launching an offensive to secure his services. Manchester United and Newcastle United are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Manchester United’s interest in Andriy Lunin is understandable. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a goalkeeper this summer amid uncertainties surrounding Altay Bayindir’s long-term future. With Ruben Amorim keen on signing a top-class goalkeeper to compete with Andre Onana, the Real Madrid stopper has emerged as a viable target for Manchester United.

As for Newcastle United, Nick Pope has struggled with fitness issues in the last few seasons, and he is approaching the twilight of his career. So, the Magpies need a new goalkeeper, with Aaron Ramsdale closing in on arriving from Southampton. However, Lunin also emerged as a target for Newcastle United, although the 2024/25 EFL Cup winners have failed with a bid to sign him from Real Madrid.

Newcastle United submitted a loan bid worth €3 million to sign the 26-year-old Ukrainian shot-stopper. With Lunin content at Real Madrid and Los Blancos uninterested in parting ways with the backup goalkeeper, Newcastle United and Manchester United must look elsewhere for a new stopper.
