Antony intent on joining Real Betis, several clubs rejected
Manchester United outcast Antony has rejected the chance to join several clubs, including Newcastle United, as he is keen on returning to La Liga club Real Betis this summer.
According to a report by ABC Sevilla, as relayed by Sport Witness, Antony remains intent on re-joining La Liga club Real Betis in the coming weeks. The Andalusian giants are eager to bolster their offensive unit by signing a wide attacker in the summer transfer window. So, the 25-year-old Manchester United misfit is a target for Los Verdiblancos.
The report has suggested that the former Ajax winger “wants to join them over moves to either Saudi or Brazil”. Meanwhile, an update by Estadio Deportivo has revealed that Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest are also keen on signing the Manchester United flop, but that he does not wish to move to another Premier League club.
Antony has revived his stuttering fortunes after a productive loan stint with Real Betis in the second half of the 2024/25 season. The 25-year-old winger barely made his mark after joining Manchester United from Ajax in a big-money move in August 2022, and his stock gradually plummeted, particularly after Ruben Amorim took over from Erik ten Hag.
However, the Brazilian international amassed nine goals and five assists in 26 appearances for Real Betis, nearly matching his dreadful output for Manchester United in a fraction of the outings. Meanwhile, the former Ajax winger’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs, with Newcastle United and Real Betis among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
What next?
Real Betis’s interest in re-signing Antony makes sense. The Andalusian giants are scouring the market for a wide attacker this summer as they aim to compete for a place in the top four in the 2025/26 La Liga season. So, it is hardly surprising that the Manchester United outcast is a top target for Los Verdiblancos.
However, Real Betis and Manchester United have not found a common ground over a deal for the ex-Ajax winger. While the 2024/25 UEFA Europa Conference League finalists favour another loan deal, Manchester United would prefer a permanent departure in the summer transfer window. As for Newcastle United, the Magpies want more firepower in the final third despite signing Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest.
The South American winger is also a target for Nottingham Forest, Botafogo, Sao Paulo FC, and Saudi Pro League clubs. However, Antony remains intent on re-joining Real Betis, and recent reports have claimed that he is ready to take a pay cut to facilitate an agreement. However, with Manchester United and Los Verdiblancos differing on the terms of a deal, the negotiations may drag further.
