Marc Cucurella set to receive new Chelsea contract
Chelsea will reportedly aim to tie 27-year-old Spanish international Marc Cucurella to a new long-term contract amid his recent links with Saudi Pro League giants Al-Nassr.
According to an update by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Marc Cucurella has a long-term future at Chelsea. The Blues are planning to offer a new contract to the Spanish full-back, as they view him as a “key part of the long-term project”. The impending move for Jorrel Hato will not affect the former Barcelona man, as the Dutchman will be the backup left-back.
Marc Cucurella and his recent improvements
Marc Cucurella has come leaps and bounds since joining Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth £60 million in August 2022. The Spaniard arrived at the West London club amid hype and fanfare surrounding him after an exceptional debut season in the Premier League ended with the player winning Brighton’s Player of the Year award.
However, Cucurella was slow off the blocks at the West London club, as he struggled to make his mark in his first 18 months at Stamford Bridge. However, the 27-year-old full-back has been exceptional since midway through his second campaign with Chelsea, and he was one of the Blues’ best players in the 2024/25 season.
The Spanish international has turned out over 100 times thus far for Chelsea while chipping in with eight goals and nine assists. Cucurella has become a mainstay at the back for his club and country, and his progress has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs across the world. Al-Nassr will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
What next?
Al-Nassr’s interest in Marc Cucurella makes sense. The big-spending Saudi giants have been active in the summer transfer window as they aim to build a squad that can win the Saudi Pro League title in the 2025/26 season. Cristiano Ronaldo has yet to win the trophy since joining Al-Nassr a few years ago, and they want to fix that in the upcoming campaign.
Joao Felix has already joined Al-Nassr from Chelsea, and recent reports suggested that the Saudi giants want to add his former Chelsea teammate to Stefano Pioli’s squad. However, the FIFA Club World Cup winners will not part ways with the 27-year-old Spaniard this summer, as they plan to tie him to a new contract.
The Blues view Cucurella as a “key part of the long-term project”, with Enzo Maresca considering him an “important player”. While many believed Jorrel Hato’s impending arrival would put the Spanish international under pressure, the Dutchman will be the backup left-back. So, a bright future at Chelsea is on the cards for Cucurella.
