Liverpool beat Arsenal to Will Wright signature
Liverpool have beaten off intense competition from Arsenal for the signing of Salford City’s 17-year-old English attacking sensation Will Wright.
According to The Times, Liverpool have found a breakthrough in their chase of Will Wright and reached an agreement with Salford City for the teenager’s signature. In the process of acquiring the 17-year-old English attacking sensation, the Merseysiders have beaten off competition from Arsenal after the Londoners went ahead in the race.
Will Wright has been touted as one of the most promising youngsters in English football, following his rise to prominence with Salford City. The teenage sensation is a striker by trade and scored 50 goals across age groups at his club last season.
Liverpool were the firm contenders for the player, and they had earlier agreed a £100,000 deal with Salford City. They also had a broad agreement on personal terms with the teenager, but Arsenal swooped in late to offer double the money the Merseysiders put on the table.
The Gunners found an agreement with Salford City for £200,000 plus add-ons, which would have reportedly taken the deal to a rumoured figure of £250,000. The only caveat there was that Arsenal did not have an agreement on personal terms with the player, which has evidently been in the works and probably allowed Liverpool to contemplate re-entering the race.
Liverpool are now on the verge of signing Wright following an agreement with Salford City in the region of £200,000. The final fee is visibly less than what Arsenal had agreed to pay, but here the player’s preference to join the Merseysiders played a huge role.
Will Wright wanted the Liverpool move
A move to Liverpool was appealing for the 17-year-old English attacking sensation, who wanted to stay in the North West of England. There are plenty of things to consider, given that London might have been brilliant for the future, but currently, the geographical reasons for choosing Liverpool might be in line with what the player and his family want.
Moreover, there was a big choice to make about the current project at either club, and given his familiarity with Liverpool, Wright potentially chose them over Arsenal. It remains to be seen how the Merseysiders design a pathway for the teenager, as he has all the minerals to become a top talent in the future.
