Antonio Cordero heading out of Newcastle United on loan
Newcastle United summer signing Antonio Cordero is all set to join Belgian outfit Westerlo on a season-long loan.
According to a report from Nieuwsblad, Antonio Cordero is expected to soon complete his loan move to Westerlo. He secured a transfer to Newcastle United at the start of the month and is now set to join the Belgian outfit in order to ensure he gets regular first-team action.
Cordero came up the ranks at Malaga. He got promoted to their first team last summer and put in some impressive performances. The 18-year-old winger was involved in a total of 39 league fixtures in the second division of Spain and finished with 13 goal contributions (6 goals, 7 assists).
He showcased maturity beyond his age, and his performances put him on the radar of some of the biggest clubs in the world. While multiple top clubs tried to lure him, Newcastle United managed to win the race for his services.
They managed to sign the teenage attacking sensation who was runner-up at the European Under-19 Championship last month on a free transfer. While he was a part of their first-team setup for a few weeks, Eddie Howe decided against keeping him around.
Cordero set to join Westerlo on loan
The manager wasn’t sure if he could give Cordero enough minutes in the top flight. As a result, they were on the lookout for a club to send him out on loan and ensure he continues to grow at a rapid pace. Westerlo were keen on his services and they have managed to strike a deal with the Magpies to have him on a temporary basis.
He will be a part of the Belgian club for a year, and the transfer is expected to be finalised later this week after he undergoes his medicals. A move to Westerlo seems to be the right move for the teenager as it will allow him to play regular first-team football.
Depending on his performance, Howe could decide whether to have him in his squad next time out. While he prefers playing out wide on the left, he can feature as a number ten as well as on the right. Cordero could do wonders for the Belgian club, and the Tyneside club will be closely following his progress.
