Aaron Ramsdale set to join Newcastle United as deal agreed
Newcastle United will reportedly sign 27-year-old English international Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by The Athletic, Aaron Ramsdale has been the subject of interest from Newcastle United this week. The Magpies have been keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. James Trafford was the Tyneside club’s top target before he rejoined Manchester City.
So, Newcastle United identified the Southampton shot-stopper as an alternative to Trafford, with the two clubs striking an agreement over a season-long loan deal. The 2024/25 EFL Cup winners will also have the option to complete a permanent move for a “sizeable fee” next year.
Aaron Ramsdale and his frustrating career
Aaron Ramsdale has endured a dramatic career in the last half a decade despite being among the most dependable goalkeepers in the Premier League. The 27-year-old has suffered relegation from the top flight with three clubs since the 2019/20 season, going down to the EFL Championship with Bournemouth, Sheffield United, and Southampton.
The English international joined Southampton from Arsenal in a deal worth £25 million last summer, but he was helpless in stopping the Saints from suffering relegation from the Premier League. Ramsdale has kept only four clean sheets in 32 games for Southampton while conceding 68 goals. However, a swift return to the Premier League is on the cards, with Newcastle United set to sign him in the summer transfer window.
Premier League return beckons
Aaron Ramsdale has been on Newcastle United’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, considering James Trafford snubbed the Tyneside outfit to rejoin Manchester City this week. So, Newcastle United had to recalibrate quickly, with the Southampton shot-stopper emerging as an alternative.
The Magpies have been keen on signing a goalkeeper this summer after Nick Pope struggled with fitness issues in the last two seasons. Ramsdale will bolster Newcastle United’s goalkeeping department, with the 2024/25 EFL Cup winners securing an agreement with Southampton over a loan deal for the 27-year-old Englishman.
The deal will give Newcastle United the option to seal a permanent move for Ramsdale for a “sizeable fee” next summer. The English international will hope that his relegation curse ends in the 2025/26 season, and Newcastle United will hope the summer frustrations end with a renewed approach in the final weeks of the transfer window.
