Girona eyeing Mateo Joseph swoop, price tag an issue

La Liga club Girona will reportedly look to sign 21-year-old Spanish striker Mateo Joseph from newly promoted Premier League outfit Leeds United in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by SPORT, Mateo Joseph is the subject of interest from Girona. The White and Reds are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a striker in the summer transfer window. So, the 21-year-old wantaway Leeds United centre-forward has emerged as a target for the Catalan outfit.

Meanwhile, Leeds United will demand around €14 million to part ways with the Spaniard in the summer transfer window. However, the valuation is an issue for Girona after Real Betis scoffed at the West Midlands club’s asking price to part ways with Joseph in the coming weeks.

Mateo Joseph and his exit desire

Mateo Joseph has been in and out of the starting lineup since joining Leeds United from Espanyol in January 2022. The Santander native has progressed in the last three and a half years, but his output has not been as prolific as he would have liked. Meanwhile, the 21-year-old striker has shared game time with Joel Piroe in the final third.

The Spanish striker has turned out 73 times thus far for Leeds United while chipping in with six goals and four assists. Joseph wants to embark on a new adventure this summer, and his stock in the market is high, particularly in La Liga. Girona will be among the prospective suitors vying for the Leeds United attacker’s signature in the summer transfer window.

La Liga move beckons?

Girona’s interest in Mateo Joseph is understandable. The White and Reds are scouring the market for a striker this summer, with Michel demanding more firepower in the final third. In addition, captain Cristhian Stuani is in the twilight of his career and will likely hang up his boots in the coming years.

So, Girona can do with a promising striker as they aim to return to the UEFA Champions League after the European campaign in the 2024/25 season. Joseph has thus emerged as a viable target, with the Catalan outfit weighing up a summer move for the 21-year-old Spaniard. However, Leeds United’s asking price of €14 million poses a problem.

The White and Reds do not want to fork out €14 million to sign Joseph, with the valuation also an issue for Real Betis after the Basque outfit failed with a bid to secure his services. It will be interesting to see if Girona can land the Spanish striker in the coming weeks.
