Werder Bremen set to acquire Leeds defender Isaac Schmidt on loan
Patrick Berger reports that Werder Bremen have reached an agreement to sign Leeds United right-back Isaac Schmidt on loan. Having already secured the services of centre-back Maximilian Wöber, Schmidt shall be the second Leeds defender to move to the Hanseatic Bundesliga club this summer. Transfermarkt.de confirms the rumor.
Both sources note that negotiations between the two sides are proceeding, albeit with some speed bumps. Werder do not wish to commit themselves to new spending after the record €10m purchase of Samuel Mbangula. It’s such that the German club wishes to avoid a loan fee or obligatory purchase option for the 25-year-old.
Schmidt joined Leeds last year, but logged only 251 minutes under former Gladbach head coach Daniel Farke last year. The twice-capped Swiss international played almost no role in Leeds’ promotion back to the English top flight. Schmidt featured for only 71 minutes in 12 EFL Championship appearances.
Isaac can play higher up in midfield and Werder’s sudden interest in him might relate to the fact that Mitchell Weiser’s production numbers need replacing following the team talisman’s major injury.
