Atalanta eyeing Beto as Mateo Retegui replacement
Atalanta are eyeing a move for Everton star Beto as a potential replacement for Mateo Retegui, who has joined Saudi side Al-Qadsiah.
According to Calciomercato, Atalanta are set to target a move for Beto as Mateo Retegui’s replacement. The latter was the Serie A top scorer last season and has moved to Saudi side Al-Qadsiah, as the Bergamo side eye the Everton star as a potential replacement for the Italian international.
Atalanta are once again in a period of transition, and with Gian Piero Gasperini no longer at the club, the Bergamo side are probably staring at significant changes. There is already talk of key defender Giorgio Scalvini leaving, while star attacker Ademola Lookman has been linked with a move away from the Gewiss Stadium.
La Dea have already lost a top goalscorer this summer following a €68 million sale of Mateo Retegui to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Qadsiah, as replacing him would be a big task for Atalanta. They are now angling a move for Everton star Beto, who has previous experience in the Italian top flight owing to his spell at Udinese before he joined the Toffees.
Beto is in an interesting period at Everton, where he has attracted interest from elsewhere earlier, but there is an element of trust placed by manager David Moyes. Last season was probably his best with the Toffees, but with the club angling for striker arrivals such as Hamza Igamane and Mika Beireth, the door could be open for the striker, who contributed to 13 goals last season, to depart.
Atalanta could be a good enough choice for the striker, with the Serie A top-four club certainly ready to offer Champions League football next season. It would be an upgrade of sorts, although any move will depend on the price tag as well as the role he will be given under the new Atalanta boss Ivan Juric.
Everton ready to sell Beto?
The way Everton are moving in the market following some key departures like Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, they could even let go of Beto. Having signed for a club in a reported €25 million deal from Udinese, the Toffees are demanding as much to sell him. They have already signed Thierno Barry so far, but there are moves for Malick Fofana and others in the pipeline to refresh their attacking setup.
Hence, Beto could be someone sacrificed to refresh the attack, as Everton might use the funds to bring in a replacement for the player. Whether Atalanta are serious about signing Beto remains the question, as things could get clearer in the coming period.
