West Ham United rival Aston Villa, Fulham in Romano Schmid race
West Ham United will compete with Aston Villa and Fulham to sign 25-year-old Austrian international Romano Schmid from Bundesliga club Werder Bremen this summer.
According to an update by Jacob Steinberg, Romano Schmid is the subject of interest from West Ham United. The Hammers are scouring the market for a playmaker this summer and have set their sights on the Werder Bremen midfielder. However, the East London club will face stiff competition from Aston Villa and Fulham, with the Bundesliga club demanding €15 million to part ways with him.
Romano Schmid and his Bundesliga journey
Romano Schmid has made considerable progress since joining SV Werder Bremen from Red Bull Salzburg in 2019. The Graz native spent his formative years in Austria before graduating from the youth division at Sturm Graz. However, the 25-year-old has risen in prominence during his spell in the Bundesliga in the last half a dozen years.
The Austrian international enjoyed a solid 2024/25 campaign, contributing to 11 goals in 35 appearances across all competitions by finding the back of the net five times and providing six assists. Meanwhile, Schmid’s progress at the Bundesliga club has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Aston Villa, Fulham, and West Ham United are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Premier League adventure beckons?
The SV Werder Bremen playmaker has been on Aston Villa’s radar for a long time, and the West Midlands outfit attempted to secure his services in the winter transfer window. The continued interest is understandable, considering Morgan Rogers and Jacob Ramsey are targets for several Premier League clubs. So, Schmid is an option worth considering for Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Romano Schmid has also been on Fulham’s wishlist for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, considering Andreas Pereira faces an uncertain future at the West London club. So, the Werder Bremen playmaker has emerged as a viable target for Fulham.
As for West Ham United, Mohammed Kudus has joined Tottenham Hotspur this summer, while recent reports have linked Lucas Paqueta with a move away from the London Stadium. So, Schmid is a viable target for West Ham, with the Hammers “considering a move” for the Werder Bremen playmaker. Meanwhile, the Bundesliga outfit will demand around €15 million to part ways with Schmid.
Werder Bremen’s asking price to sell the 25-year-old Austrian international makes him an appealing target for Aston Villa, Fulham, and West Ham. It will be interesting to see if a summer move to the Premier League is on the cards for Schmid.
