Chelsea utility man Renato Veiga will unlikely join La Liga club Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window, and his representatives are working on an alternate solution.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Renato Veiga has been the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros have been keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 21-year-old Chelsea utility man emerged as a target for the Spanish club.

However, Los Rojiblancos will unlikely sign the Lisbon native in the summer transfer window after landing David Hancko from Feyenoord. With Veiga’s move to Atletico Madrid stalling, the Chelsea defender’s representatives are working on finding an alternate solution to his situation in the summer transfer window.

Renato Veiga and an ill-advised move

Renato Veiga has endured an unremarkable spell since joining Chelsea from FC Basel in a deal worth £12 million last summer. The 21-year-old made his mark whenever he got an opportunity from Enzo Maresca in the first half of the 2024/25 season, and he was a utility man due to his ability to play as a left-back, a centre-back, and a holding midfielder. However, the youngster was a backup option, and he was unhappy with his situation.

Chelsea loaned him to Juventus earlier this year, and the Portuguese international was impressive in the second half of the 2024/25 season, as he got the opportunity to play in his preferred centre-back spot. Veiga turned out 15 times for the Bianconeri while chipping in with one assist. However, a permanent move to the Serie A club has not seen the light of day, and Atletico Madrid pursued his signature in the last few weeks.
