Newcastle United fail with bid to sign Yoane Wissa, will return with improved offer

Newcastle United will return with a revised offer as they look to beat Tottenham to the signature of Brentford striker Yoane Wissa.

According to a report from The Times, Newcastle United are pushing to sign Brentford star Yoane Wissa ahead of next season. The Magpies failed with their initial offer, but they are now set to return with an improved offer as they look to beat Tottenham in the race for his services.

Wissa joined the Bees in the summer of 2021 from FC Lorient, and he has gone on to establish himself as a key figure in the team. The 28-year-old striker was on fire last season as he contributed towards 25 goals (20 goals, 5 assists) in his 39 outings.

While he still has a year left on his deal and the Bees have the option to extend his contract by another 12 months, Wissa’s future has become a massive talking point of late. He looks unsettled at the club and seems to be pushing for a move away, amidst interest from Newcastle and Tottenham.

The player left Brentford’s Portuguese training camp last weekend. He reportedly asked to leave the camp because of the speculation around his future. While Brentford expect him to be a part of their squad when they return home, multiple clubs are working hard to prise him away.

Newcastle are working hard to ensure Alexander Isak continues at the club, and they are also working hard to bring in another striker who can support him. Wissa is at the top of their wishlist, and they have already agreed on personal terms with the player.

Newcastle keep pushing for Wissa’s signature

The Magpies submitted an initial offer worth £25 million, but it was turned down by the Bees. Now, they are looking to return with a revised offer worth around £30 million. However, it looks unlikely that even this offer would be good enough.

The report suggests Wissa could cost around £40 million. As a result, Newcastle still have a lot to do before they can reach an agreement with Brentford. However, the Magpies are still believed to be front-runners.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are also keen on his signature, but he is no longer a priority as they have already secured the services of Mohammed Kudus to bolster their attack. They can also match the 28-year-old’s personal terms and do admire him, but it might depend on potential departures from the North London club.
