Leeds United closely monitoring Olly Tonkin
Daniel Farke’s Leeds United are reportedly keeping a close eye on non-league club Morecambe’s teenage sensation Olly Tonkin.
According to a report from Football Insider, Leeds United are interested in acquiring the services of Olly Tonkin. The Yorkshire-based outfit have been closely monitoring the highly-rated Morecambe scholar for a while now and could look to make the most out of the non-league club’s ongoing crisis.
The 18-year-old defender has had a sensational rise, and his performances have put him on the radar of multiple top clubs in the Premier League as well as the Bundesliga. The six-foot-three-inch tall centre back is currently playing for the club’s Under-21s, and scouts of top clubs have continued to track his progress ahead of a potential transfer this summer.
Morecambe are on the verge of extinction after a takeover bid has stalled. They are in a very difficult financial position, with the club’s staff still awaiting last month’s wages. The takeover could have helped them on all fronts, but now things look very bleak for them.
Tonkin looks set to leave Morecambe
Having finished at the bottom of the football league last season, they are set to compete in the National League next season. Not long ago, they were in League One, and they have certainly gone downhill at some pace.
Given all that is going on at the club, they are unlikely to be able to keep hold of Tonkin, who is considered one of the brightest talents to have come up through their ranks. Leeds United are aware of Morecambe’s ongoing situation, and they are looking to make the most out of it.
The Yorkshire-based club’s focus is on strengthening their first-team squad to ensure they survive in the English top flight. But at the same time, they want to continue to add more quality to their youth setup as they look to build for the long run.
While Tonkin is unlikely to feature for the senior side anytime soon, he will certainly be a great acquisition for the youth team, and the young centre-back surely has a very bright future. He is likely to be available for a cut-price fee with Morecambe struggling on all fronts; as a result, Leeds do not want to miss out on this opportunity.
