Arsenal closely monitoring Nelson Weiper, Tottenham also keen

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing 20-year-old German striker prodigy Nelson Weiper from Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05 this summer.

According to an update by French journalist Sebastien Vidal, Nelson Weiper is the subject of interest from Arsenal. The Gunners are keen on bolstering their offensive unit by signing a striker in the summer transfer window. So, the 20-year-old FSV Mainz 05 centre-forward has emerged as a target for the North London club.

The Bundesliga club will demand around €14 million to part ways with the Mainz native in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, Arsenal will not be alone in the battle for Weiper’s signature, with Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur also keen on securing his services.

Nelson Weiper and his young career so far

Nelson Weiper is the latest highly-rated centre-forward to rise in prominence in his homeland. The country has struggled to produce a world-class striker since Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez hung up their boots. The 20-year-old has been with FSV Mainz 05 since his youth career began in 2013, rising through the ranks at the Bundesliga club before breaking into the first-team squad.

The German striker prodigy made his first-team bow for Mainz in the first half of the 2022/23 season. However, Weiper enjoyed his breakthrough at the Bundesliga club last term, amassing 25 appearances for the senior side while chipping in with three goals and two assists. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs, including Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

London calling?

Arsenal’s interest in Nelson Weiper is understandable. The Gunners are combing the market for a striker this summer after Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz failed to make their mark in the 2024/25 season. So, Viktor Gyokeres has emerged as Arsenal’s top target. However, Weiper can be a long-term option for the North London club.

As for Tottenham, Dominic Solanke was off the boil in his debut season at the North London club. While the Lilywhites retain high hopes from the English international, signing an alternative makes sense. Several candidates, including Yoane Wissa, are on Tottenham’s radar, with Weiper a different profile, as he can be a long-term solution in the final third.

Meanwhile, the FSV Mainz 05 striker will not cost a bomb, with the Bundesliga club demanding €14 million to part ways with him. It will be interesting to see if Arsenal and Tottenham launch the offensive to sign 20-year-old German whizkid in the summer transfer window.
