Newcastle United considering Cesar Tarrega swoop
Newcastle United will reportedly look to sign 23-year-old Spanish defender Cesar Tarrega from La Liga club Valencia in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Cesar Tarrega is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 23-year-old Valencia defender has emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit.
Who is Cesar Tarrega?
Cesar Tarrega is the latest highly-rated defensive prospect to rise in prominence in his homeland. Valencia may be the new home of promising defensive prodigies, with Cristhian Mosquera also making his mark at the Mestalla. The young Spaniard’s exploits have earned him a move to Arsenal.
The Aldaia native spent his formative years in his homeland, passing through the academies at several clubs before graduating from the youth division at Valencia CF. The 23-year-old broke into the first-team squad at the Mestalla at the onset of the 2023/24 season, and he has come leaps and bounds in the last two years.
The Spanish defensive prospect has turned out nearly 50 times thus far for Valencia while chipping in with two goals and one assist. Meanwhile, Tarrega’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Newcastle United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Newcastle United’s interest in Cesar Tarrega is understandable. The Magpies are scouring the market for a centre-back this summer amid the advancing age of Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, and Jamaal Lascelles. In addition, Sven Botman struggled with fitness issues in the 2024/25 season.
Nevertheless, Botman is the long-term first-choice centre-back for Newcastle United, with Eddie Howe seeking a partner for the Dutchman in the long run. Several candidates, including Nicolo Savona, have emerged on the Tyneside club’s radar, with Tarrega also a viable target.
The 23-year-old Spaniard will be the cheapest of Newcastle United’s centre-back targets, with Valencia valuing him at around £4.5 million. It will be interesting to see if the Magpies bolster their first-team squad by signing Tarrega in the summer transfer window.
