Sean Longstaff on the verge of joining Leeds United as deal agreed
Daniel Farke’s Leeds United are on the verge of securing the services of Newcastle United homegrown star Sean Longstaff.
According to a report from Sky Sports, Leeds United have finally managed to strike a deal with Newcastle United for the signature of Sean Longstaff with their fourth bid. The Yorkshire-based outfit will fork out in excess of £12 million to add the midfield star to their squad.
Longstaff has been a part of the Newcastle United setup since his childhood days. He went up the ranks at the club and got promoted to their first team back in 2019. Over the years, the Englishman has featured in a total of 214 matches for their senior side, and he has 27 goal contributions.
While he had a prominent role in the team until the 2023/24 season, Longstaff was more of a backup option for Eddie Howe’s team last season. He was involved in 32 matches but racked up just over 1,200 minutes of first-team action.
Leeds United to complete Longstaff signing soon
With Sean Longstaff struggling to get regular game time and entering the final year of his deal at the club, Leeds United saw this as a perfect opportunity to prise him away from the Tyneside club. Daniel Farke’s team have been quite active in the transfer window as they look to add enough quality to their squad following their promotion to the top flight.
The Whites have already added Sabastiaan Bornauw, Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol, and Gabriel Gudmunsson to their squad, and they are looking to further bolster their midfield by signing the experienced Longstaff.
The 27-year-old prefers playing as a central midfielder, but he is equally effective in a defensive as well as an attacking role. His versatility could surely come in handy for Leeds. Farke’s team have been working hard to secure his signature for some time.
They were in talks with Newcastle United and submitted multiple offers. The Tyneside outfit rejected three bids from Leeds United before accepting the fourth one, which is in excess of £12 million.
Their previous offer was worth an initial £10 million plus £2 million in add-ons. Now that they have managed to convince Newcastle United to sell their academy graduate, Leeds United will be looking to wrap up this deal as quickly as possible.
