Enzo Barrenechea on the cusp of joining Benfica from Aston Villa
Benfica are inching closer to signing Enzo Barrenechea from Aston Villa, with the deal thought to be in the final stages following an improved bid.
According to Record via Sport Witness, Benfica are inching closer to securing an agreement with Aston Villa for the signing of Enzo Barrenechea. A deal for the midfielder is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations after the Eagles made an improved bid.
Enzo Barrenechea arrived last summer in a double deal from Juventus that cost Aston Villa 8 million for the Argentine midfielder alone. The 24-year-old was immediately sent out on loan to Valencia, where he excelled with his performances.
Valencia have been keen to re-sign him, but the valuations placed by Aston Villa make a permanent deal difficult for Los Che to conclude. Aston Villa wanted at least €12 million from suitors, and they have fielded plenty of interest from suitors in Spain and Portugal.
Despite the heavy interest, Aston Villa were prepared to bide their time until a viable offer that reflects their valuation of the 24-year-old Unai Emery signing. Benfica had been interested in bringing the Argentine to the club, and it appears the player is open to the idea of a switch to join up with Bruno Lage’s side this summer.
With his future at Aston Villa uncertain, and the club unwilling to budge over their demands, the midfielder is keen to leave and take up a new challenge. Benfica are in active talks with Aston Villa, and it appears they are the clear front runners in the chase for the 24-year-old Emery signing.
Benfica have made an improved bid
Aston Villa were adamant about the minimum fee of €12 million, and it appears Benfica have made that sort of offer. However, the report adds that the Portuguese giants have now made an improved bid by adding a further €3 million for Barrenechea.
As things stand, a deal is in the advanced stages, with all parties believing an agreement will be reached in the coming days. Barrenechea will be a Benfica player and will hope to end the uncertainty surrounding his future as he will aim to cement a big spot on Lage’s side ahead of the new season.
