Chelsea make fresh move to sign Mike Maignan
Chelsea could make a new attempt to lure Mike Maignan this summer, with questions still being asked about Robert Sanchez’s quality between the sticks.
According to Give Me Sport, Chelsea are prepared to revisit their interest in Mike Maignan following a setback in the pursuit earlier in the summer. Enzo Maresca’s thinking on the No.1 position may have changed slightly following Robert Sanchez’s displays at the Club World Cup, and while the Blues remain interested in the AC Milan stopper, they are not prepared to overpay for the Frenchman.
Chelsea wanted to bring in fresh faces before they travelled to the USA for the Club World Cup, but at the time, they managed to land only Liam Delap. During the tournament, they did add Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens, with the former playing a starring role in the semi-finals and the final to good effect.
There were considerable doubts over Robert Sanchez’s future before the Club World Cup commenced, and Chelsea had actively tried to recruit AC Milan stopper Mike Maignan then. However, the two clubs could not come to a middle ground about the Frenchman’s fees, and the deal collapsed.
Chelsea are still interested in Mike Maignan, as they could seek a new No.1 in the summer window. However, the Blues are not willing to pay inflated prices for a player who is in the final year of his deal that allows him to pocket £60,000-a-week in wages.
AC Milan are insistent on keeping the French international, but taking his contractual situation into account, a sale is very much possible. As Chelsea are prepared to revisit their interest in Maignan, any deal will depend on the Rossoneri’s asking price, as the circumstances from before have changed from a Chelsea perspective.
Enzo Maresca’s thinking on Robert Sanchez has changed
Sanchez had another mixed season, with many questioning whether the Spaniard is good enough long-term. However, his heroics in the triumphant Club World Cup final and the games before have added a new perspective and possibly even changed Maresca’s thinking on the situation. Chelsea hold an interest in several keepers, including PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, but the requirement is not as pressing as it was a few weeks ago.
Hence, with a possible change of stance on Sanchez, there is the possibility that Chelsea will play hardball with AC Milan for Mike Maignan. The French international will certainly look at the prospect of joining the Premier League giants, but any deal will depend on whether the Blues can get a deal done on their terms.
