Viktor Gyokeres on the verge of sealing €73.5 million move to Arsenal
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are closing in on the signature of Viktor Gyokeres, as they have an agreement in principle to sign the Sporting CP ace.
According to a report from The Athletic, Viktor Gyokeres is on the verge of joining Arsenal in the coming days, as the Premier League giants have an agreement in principle with Sporting CP to sign the Swedish international. The Gunners will pay a total of €73.5 million to bring him to North London ahead of next season.
Gyokeres has been on fire since joining the Portuguese giants from Coventry City in the summer of 2023. His sensational performances in the final third have put him on the radar of some of the biggest clubs in the world.
While he still has three years left on his deal at Sporting, he is keen on making the move to a bigger club. Numerous clubs from across Europe have been linked with him, but Arsenal have been the most serious about their pursuit since the start.
The Gunners have been on the lookout for a new striker since the start of the year, as Mikel Arteta wasn’t pleased with the output of Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. The duo even spent a significant amount of time on the sidelines last season, and they were forced to use Mikel Merino as a number nine.
Arteta is keen on ensuring he has a proven world-class finisher for next season, as he plans to push for the Premier League title. While they have quite a few names on their shortlist, they have decided to go all out to sign Gyokeres, who has 97 goals and 28 assists over the last two seasons.
Arsenal finally strike a deal for Gyokeres
Arsenal could have sealed the deal much earlier, but negotiations dragged on as Sporting president Frederico Varandas refused to accept an offer of €60 million plus €10 million in add-ons, a figure Viktor Gyokeres believed had been agreed upon for his departure.
While they already had a green light from the player’s end, as he is ready to sign a new five-year deal, negotiations with Sporting were not that straightforward. However, they have finally managed to reach an agreement in principle over a deal worth €73.5 million.
Arsenal will pay €63.5 million as a fixed fee with another €10 million as add-ons. The player’s agent has waived his fee to help facilitate a deal. They have already taken the final steps in negotiations, and once minor details are sorted, Gyokeres could be gearing up for his medical as an Arsenal player.
