West Ham United begin direct negotiations with Arnau Martinez

West Ham United will reportedly look to sign 22-year-old Spanish defensive prospect Arnau Martinez from La Liga club Girona in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet AS, Arnau Martinez is the subject of interest from West Ham United. The Hammers are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a versatile right-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 22-year-old Girona defender has emerged as a target for the East London club.

West Ham and Martinez have already been in contact, holding direct negotiations over personal terms. Meanwhile, the Spaniard has a release clause worth €14 million in his contract with the Catalan outfit, and they will likely sell the young full-back for a bid around that sum.

Arnau Martinez and his young career so far

Arnau Martinez has made considerable progress since breaking into the first-team squad at Girona FC. The Dalt Prize native spent his formative years in Catalonia, passing through the academies at CE Premia da Dalt, FC Barcelona, and CE L’Hospitalet before graduating from the youth division at Girona FC.

The Spanish full-back has been a mainstay at the back for Girona for a long time, turning out over 150 times thus far while chipping in with nine goals and 18 assists. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old prospect’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. West Ham United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.

London calling?

West Ham United mulled over signing Arnau Martinez last summer before the deal failed to see the light of day. The continued interest makes sense, as Vladimir Coufal has departed from the London Stadium as a free agent. So, the Hammers have been scouring the market for a right-back this summer, with several candidates, including Oscar Mingueza, emerging on their radar.

In addition, the East London outfit can do with a centre-back after Jean-Clair Todibo failed to make his mark in the 2024/25 season. So, the versatile Martinez has emerged as a viable target for West Ham, as he can be a two-in-one solution for both defensive positions. The Hammers have contacted the Spaniard’s representatives to hold direct talks over personal terms.

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old has a release clause worth €14 million in his contract with Girona, and the Catalan outfit will accept a bid around that figure. So, it will be interesting to see if West Ham can convince the Spanish defender to move to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window.
