Newcastle United front-runners to sign Conor Gallagher, Aston Villa also keen
Newcastle United are seen as the front-runners to sign Conor Gallagher, with Aston Villa also in the mix for the England international.
According to Caught Offside, Newcastle United are thought to be leading the race to sign Conor Gallagher, with the midfielder pondering over his future at Atletico Madrid. Aston Villa are also in the mix, having made contact with the English midfielder’s representatives, although the Magpies might have the edge in the chase.
Conor Gallagher could have a tricky decision to make about his future before the new campaign begins. The former Chelsea star made the move to Atletico Madrid last summer, and despite having featured in 50 games across all competitions, he has not particularly nailed down a starting berth in Diego Simeone’s midfield.
Gallagher will want his ticket punched in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for next year’s World Cup, and he will need regular minutes to aid that dream. Hence, there is a possibility of the midfielder considering a switch from Atletico Madrid, who have already signed Johnny Cardoso and Alex Baena to strengthen their midfield.
Everton were keen on the midfielder, with Atletico Madrid reportedly demanding at least €45-50 million for the England international. Aston Villa are the club who have made some inroads in the pursuit, as Unai Emery’s side have already contacted Gallagher’s camp to understand the details of a potential transfer.
Aston Villa already boast a competitive midfield setup, and adding Gallagher could be a solid idea ahead of the new season. Whether Gallagher sees a place to nail down in Emery’s midfield setup remains to be seen, but the Birmingham-based side are already trailing Newcastle United in the race.
Newcastle United ahead in the Conor Gallagher race
Newcastle United are interested in Gallagher, and they could make the move for the €45-50 million-rated La Liga midfielder ahead of the summer. The Magpies are thought to be leading the hunt, as Eddie Howe is a big fan of the midfielder’s energetic displays and understanding of the game.
Atletico Madrid and Newcastle United are set to face off in a pre-season friendly on August 9, as officials from both clubs will be present. Hence, that could be the stage to hold talks theoretically, as the Magpies could also have the upper hand due to the presence of Champions League football next season.
