Tottenham working on deal to re-sign Dennis Cirkin
Tottenham are already working on a deal for Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin, with the newly promoted side open to a sale.
According to Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Tottenham are getting serious about re-signing former academy prospect and Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin. The 23-year-old wide man could be up for sale as the newly promoted Black Cats have already reinforced in the left-back role, which could see the defender rejoin Spurs.
Dennis Cirkin was a key performer for Sunderland last season, making 36 appearances in the Championship, scoring three and assisting two from a left-back position. While he remains a key player for the Black Cats, the club have already secured the free transfer of former Atletico Madrid full-back Renildo.
Sunderland are also chasing Manchester United-linked Melvin Bard, who is a highly-rated left-back, meaning the Black Cats are stocking up in the left-back position. Hence, they are likely to open the doors to sell Cirkin should some of his suitors make a serious attempt.
Tottenham are certainly showing signs that they are willing to re-sign the player. Cirkin came through the Spurs academy and was sold to Sunderland back in 2021. He has earned considerable experience there, making 116 appearances across all competitions so far for the Wearside club.
Spurs have been interested in Cirkin since March and have reportedly begun working on a deal to re-sign the player. New boss Thomas Frank wants good options in all positions, with the full-back roles currently lacking one or two players who can act as cover. They were incidentally linked with Josh Acheampong, who plays as a right-back, and would make sense for their system.
Dennis Cirkin to re-join Tottenham?
The idea of signing Cirkin might stem from the fact that Tottenham realistically lack a back-up to Destiney Udogie at left-back. Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell was linked with Spurs, and now the 23-year-old wide man Cirkin is an option for the north Londoners to consider.
Should Cirkin rejoin Spurs, he would play backup to Udogie, while Djed Spence could compete with Pedro Porro on the right-hand side. There’s an argument to be had about the 23-year-old wide man and his wider experience in the top flight, although he would fit the system perfectly as a backup player who occasionally starts games.
