Chelsea line up €40 million move for Gonzalo Garcia
Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Gonzalo Garcia from Real Madrid during the summer transfer window.
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Chelsea are plotting a €40 million move for 21-year-old Real Madrid breakout star Gonzalo Garcia. The young striker has impressed with his performances for Los Blancos at the FIFA Club World Cup, and he his form during the competition has alerted the West London club.
He has the qualities to develop into a reliable goalscorer, and Chelsea could certainly use another striker. Although they have invested in Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, they are looking to bring in another goalscorer before the window closes.
Delap did quite well for Ipswich Town last season, but he is largely unproven at a big club. Similarly, Pedro was impressive for Brighton, but he was not a prolific goalscorer. Garcia could share the goal-scoring burden at Chelsea next season.
The opportunity to join a Premier League club could be quite exciting for the youngster. Real Madrid are unlikely to be able to offer him ample opportunities, and he needs to play more often in order to fulfil his potential.
The move to Chelsea could be ideal for him, especially if they can provide him with game time assurances.
Garcia could prove to be a bargain
If they manage to sign him for €40 million, it could prove to be a shrewd investment. The player has the potential to develop into a key performer for Chelsea. He could end up justifying the investment in the long run.
It will be interesting to see if Real Madrid are prepared to sanction his departure in the coming weeks. Losing a talented young player like Garcia might not be appealing for them. Also, they are lacking in depth in the attacking unit as well. They might feel that the youngster would be a handy option for them next season.
Real Madrid had a disappointing season by their standards, and they will look to win the league title and the UEFA Champions League. They need as much quality as they can get. It will be interesting to see how Real Madrid react if Chelsea comes forward with an official offer to get the deal done.
