Liverpool unwilling to pay £45-50 million to sign Marc Guehi
Liverpool will not pay £45-50 million to sign 24-year-old English international Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window.
According to an update by Ben Jacobs, Marc Guehi is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds are eager to bolster their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 24-year-old Crystal Palace mainstay has emerged as a target for the Merseyside outfit.
However, the Premier League champions have concerns about Crystal Palace’s price tag, and they do not want to fork out £45-50 million to secure the Englishman’s services. Liverpool’s decision-makers have assessed that the “price would need to be well south of this bracket”. In addition, they might pursue defenders in the 18-22 age bracket, with Guehi falling outside that.
Marc Guehi and his rise
Marc Guehi has gone from strength to strength since joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea in July 2021. The 24-year-old has been a mainstay at the back for the South London club in the last four years, establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League while becoming a regular for his national side.
The English international has turned out over 150 times thus far for Crystal Palace while chipping in with eight goals and four assists. Meanwhile, Guehi’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Liverpool will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Anfield adventure beckons?
Liverpool’s interest in Marc Guehi makes sense. The Reds are scouring the market for a centre-back in the summer transfer window as they prepare to part ways with Jarell Quansah. The homegrown centre-back will join Bayer Leverkusen this week, vacating a spot in the defensive unit at Anfield.
In addition, Joe Gomez has struggled with fitness issues throughout his stint with Liverpool, while Virgil van Dijk is on the wrong side of 30. So, Guehi has emerged as a viable target for the Merseyside outfit. However, Crystal Palace’s asking price of £45-50 million to sell the Englishman may scupper the deal.
The Premier League champions do not want to pay £45-50 million to sign Guehi, and they value him at a much lower price. In addition, Liverpool may focus on the 18-22 age bracket, whereas Guehi is 24. So, while personal terms may not be an issue, a deal will only see the light of day if Liverpool can sign him for less than £45-50 million.
