Aston Villa, Newcastle United priced out of Samu Aghehowa move

Aston Villa and Newcastle United have reportedly been interested in signing 21-year-old Spanish striker Samu Aghehowa from FC Porto in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by O Jogo, as relayed by Sport Witness, Samu Aghehowa has considerable interest from the Premier League. Aston Villa and Newcastle United have been keen on signing the 21-year-old FC Porto striker in the summer transfer window after his excellent 2024/25 campaign with the Primeira Liga giants.

However, the Portuguese giants have been adamant that the Spaniard would only depart from Estadio do Dragao for a fee of around €100 million in the summer transfer window. That has priced Aston Villa and Newcastle United out of a summer move for the Olympics 2024 gold medalist.

Samu Aghehowa and his young career so far

Samu Aghehowa has established himself as one of the best young strikers in the world since enjoying his breakthrough in the 2032/24 season. However, the 21-year-old could not establish a foothold in the first-team squad at Atletico Madrid, and Los Rojiblancos sold him to FC Porto for €15 million last summer while retaining 50 per cent of his rights.

The Spanish striker has enjoyed a solid debut campaign with FC Porto, contributing to 30 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions by finding the back of the net 27 times and providing three assists. Meanwhile, Samu’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs, including Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Aston Villa’s interest in Samu Aghehowa is understandable. The Villans are combing the market for a striker coming into the summer transfer window after seeing Marcus Rashford return to Manchester United. In addition, Ollie Watkins faces an uncertain future at Villa Park, compelling Aston Villa to turn to the market for a striker.

As for Newcastle United, Callum Wilson is departing from St. James’ Park as a free agent. In addition, Alexander Isak is a long-term target for several European bigwigs. So, the Magpies must sign a striker to preserve their position against his departure. The FC Porto attacker has thus emerged as a viable target, although Newcastle United and Aston Villa will not sign him the Spaniard year.

With Atletico Madrid reserving 50 per cent of Samu’s rights, FC Porto wanted to sell him for €100 million in the summer transfer window. While the Primeira Liga giants can buy a further 30 per cent of the Spanish striker’s rights for €10 million, they have been keen on recouping a high sum from his sale. However, Aston Villa and Newcastle United will not break the bank to make that happen.
