Everton ready to ramp up talks to sign Thierno Barry, player wants move

Everton are reportedly in a strong position to land Villarreal striker Thierno Barry this summer.

Everton are poised to fast-track negotiations for Villarreal striker Thierno Barry following France’s recent exit from the Under-21 European Championship, according to TBR Football.

The 22-year-old forward has long been on the Toffees’ radar, but with his commitments at the international level now concluded, Everton are preparing to intensify their efforts to land the in-demand Frenchman. Barry, who enjoyed a breakout campaign with Villarreal last season, scored an impressive 19 goals across 41 appearances in all competitions, firmly establishing himself as one of the most exciting young strikers in La Liga.

Having impressed scouts not just in Spain but across Europe, Barry’s name has been frequently linked with Premier League clubs. However, Everton now appear to be in the driving seat, buoyed by the player’s reported openness to a move to England. It is understood that Barry is intrigued by the prospect of becoming a focal point in a Premier League side and leading the line in one of the world’s most competitive leagues.

Preliminary talks between Everton and Barry’s representatives have been ongoing for several weeks. These discussions have reportedly reached an advanced stage, with the player’s camp now awaiting a formal approach to Villarreal. Everton are believed to be ready to meet Barry’s release clause of £34 million and are also considering a marginally higher offer if it allows them to structure the deal in favourable instalments.

Driving the negotiations from the Merseyside club’s side are Nick Hammond, Everton’s newly appointed head of player trading, and director of scouting James Smith. Both figures have made the signing of a new striker a summer priority after a Premier League season that exposed the club’s glaring lack of firepower.

Indeed, no Everton player managed to reach double figures in league goals last season. Iliman Ndiaye showed flashes of potential, but his best work came from deeper or wider positions, further highlighting the urgent need for a reliable centre-forward.

Barry, who scored 11 goals in La Liga and added to his tally in cup competitions, may not arrive as a guaranteed 20-goal marksman. However, his physicality, pace, and composure in front of the goal have been widely praised. His performances at the U21 Euros, despite France’s disappointing campaign, only solidified his reputation as a striker with considerable upside.

Everton now aim to wrap up the deal swiftly, knowing competition could mount. For Barry, the stage is set—and Goodison Park may be the perfect next step.
