Tottenham rival Aston Villa, others in Jhon Lucumi chase
Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly compete with Aston Villa and other English clubs to sign 26-year-old Colombian international Jhon Lucumi from Serie A club Bologna.
According to a report by Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, Jhon Lucumi is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites are combing the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding Cristian Romero’s long-term future. So, the 26-year-old Bologna defender has emerged as a target for the North London outfit.
The South American defender is also a target for Aston Villa, while other Premier League clubs like Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, Bournemouth, and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also keen on signing him from Bologna in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, the Serie A outfit will demand around €28 million to part ways with him in the summer transfer window.
Jhon Lucumi and his Bologna story
Jhon Lucumi has made considerable progress since joining Bologna from KRC Genk in July 2022. The 26-year-old has come leaps and bounds in the last three years, establishing himself as one of the most underrated centre-backs in Serie A.
The Colombian international has turned out over 100 times thus far for Bologna while chipping in with one goal and three assists. Meanwhile, Lucumi’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Premier League outfits, in particular, are keen on signing him, with Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.
Premier League adventure on the horizon?
Aston Villa’s interest in Jhon Lucumi makes sense. The Villans want to bolster their defensive unit in the summer transfer window by signing a centre-back. While Axel Disasi has returned to Chelsea after his loan spell, Tyrone Mings is on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the twilight of his career. So, the Bologna defender has emerged as a viable target for Aston Villa.
As for Tottenham Hotspur, Cristian Romero faces an uncertain future this summer amid his links with Atletico Madrid. So, several centre-backs have emerged on the North London club’s radar, and Kota Takai is on the verge of moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, Lucumi is also an option worth considering, especially at a price tag of around €28 million.
Apart from the two Premier League bigwigs, Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, Bournemouth, and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also keen on signing the 26-year-old Colombian defender. Meanwhile, Bologna may not sell Lucumi despite valuing him at €28 million as they may wait for him to sign a new contract.
