Newcastle United accelerate move to sign James Trafford

Newcastle United will reportedly look to sign 22-year-old English goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, James Trafford is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are eager to bolster their goalkeeping unit in the summer transfer window amid Nick Pope’s fitness issues. So, the 22-year-old Burnley goalkeeper has emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit.

The Magpies have intensified their efforts to sign the Englishman from Burnley in a deal worth £30 million, and they may secure an agreement “within the next 48 hours”. Trafford was ready to sign a five-year contract at Newcastle United last summer, and he has “reaffirmed his desire” to join the Tyneside club this year.

James Trafford has established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in his homeland since joining Burnley from Manchester City in July 2023. While the 22-year-old endured a challenging debut season with the Clarets and conceded a glut of goals, his second campaign produced record-breaking numbers.

The English goalkeeping prospect kept 29 clean sheets in 45 EFL Championship appearances while conceding only 16 goals in the 2024/25 season, helping the Clarets secure Premier League promotion. So, it is hardly surprising that Trafford has been a target for several well-known clubs, with Newcastle United closing in on securing his services in the summer transfer window.

James Trafford has been on Newcastle United’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, considering Nick Pope has struggled with fitness issues in the last few seasons. So, the Tyneside outfit must sign a young and highly-rated shot-stopper in the summer transfer window, making Trafford a viable target.
