Barcelona could recoup 20% of Joan Garcia transfer fee from Espanyol

Barcelona paid €25m earlier this week to sign Joan Garcia, and they could now get back €5m of this from Espanyol, whom they signed the 24-year-old goalkeeper from.

Barcelona have already turned their attention to their next leading target: Nico Williams. But in order to be able to trigger his Athletic Club release clause, they need to generate funds, and money could be coming in from Espanyol.

Espanyol interest in Mika Marmol is good news for Barcelona

It would not relate to Garcia, but rather, the funds could arrive via a 50% sell-on clause that Barcelona have for former defender Mika Marmol. As per Marca, Espanyol are interested in signing him from relegated Las Palmas.

The €25m received from Garcia’s sale means that Espanyol have money to spend when the transfer window opens on the 1st of July. And €10m could go towards Marmol, who will almost certainly leave Las Palmas this summer due to their relegation to Segunda.

Marmol has attracted significant interest over the last 12 months, and Espanyol are the latest club to keep tabs on his situation. He has a €10m release clause, which Las Palmas are likely to hold out for given that half of the transfer fee would be going to Barcelona.

AS Roma and Como are also in for Marmol, which gives Las Palmas more leverage to hold out for €10m. And if Espanyol were to pay this, it would mean that Barcelona are able to get back 20% of the transfer fee that they have just paid for Garcia, who will be their new starting goalkeeper.

Sell-on clauses will be important for Barcelona this summer, especially if they continue to have trouble in moving on first teamers that they want gone. Marmol could be one of several ex-players that bring funds in that can be used on Williams.
