Newcastle United rival Crystal Palace in Tiago Djalo chase
Newcastle United will compete with Crystal Palace to sign 25-year-old Portuguese centre-back Tiago Djalo from Serie A club Juventus in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Italian outlet Tutto Juve, Tiago Djalo is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit in the summer transfer window by signing a right-footed centre-back. So, the Portuguese defender has emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit.
The Magpies have recently sounded out a summer move for the Amadora native, who has spent the 2024/25 season on loan at FC Porto. Meanwhile, Newcastle United will compete with Crystal Palace for Djalo’s signature, with the player not in Juventus’s plans for the 2025/26 season.
Tiago Djalo and his recent struggles
Tiago Djalo has struggled for stability since joining Juventus from LOSC Lille in January 2024. The return to Italy for the first time since representing AC Milan in age-group football has not worked out as well as the 25-year-old would have liked, as he has made only one appearance thus far for the Bianconeri.
FC Porto signed Djalo on a season-long loan deal last summer, but the Portuguese centre-back managed only 1,303 minutes of game time across 17 appearances in all competitions while chipping in with two goals. However, Djalo’s stock in the market is high, with several Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace and Newcastle United, vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.
Premier League adventure on the horizon?
Crystal Palace’s interest in Tiago Djalo is understandable. The Eagles are in a spot of bother over Marc Guehi’s long-term future, with the English international a target for several Premier League bigwigs. So, the South London club may need a new centre-back in the summer transfer window, with Djalo emerging as a viable target.
As for Newcastle United, Sven Botman struggled with persistent fitness issues in the 2024/25 season. In addition, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, and Dan Burn are on the wrong side of 30. So, Newcastle United can do with a young centre-back, with Djalo an option worth considering.
Interestingly, the 25-year-old Portuguese defender has been on Newcastle United’s radar since 2023, and the Magpies have submitted an enquiry for him. With Djalo not in Juventus’s plans for the 2025/26 season, a move to the Premier League may be on the cards, with Crystal Palace also keen on securing his services.
