Liverpool contemplate Ibrahima Konate sale

Liverpool could consider selling Ibrahima Konate in the event of failing to agree on a new deal with the defender as Real Madrid remain keen.

According to Fichajes, Liverpool are open to the idea of selling Ibrahima Konate this summer should the defender fail to agree on fresh terms. Real Madrid are reportedly circling for the France international to sign him on a free transfer next summer when his contract expires, but the Merseysiders could plan on a profitable exit rather than losing him for nothing in 2026.

Liverpool will once again find themselves in a spot of bother when it comes to player contracts. For the whole of last season, they chased Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold to persuade them over fresh terms, and now Ibrahima Konate is in a similar position.

Should they plot a similar strategy with Konate as they did with defensive partner van Dijk, the situation is completely different. The Frenchman is much younger and has a long career in front of him, which makes the idea of a contract renewal rather urgent compared to the Dutchman.

Liverpool were hopeful of agreeing a new deal with Ibrahima Konate, but things have not moved forward as it was expected earlier. Hence, the club are in limbo with the Frenchman’s future, who cost them £35 million back in the summer of 2021.

Konate enters the final year of his deal, and with no new contract in sight, Liverpool could contemplate a sale especially if he cannot agree on fresh terms. The Merseysiders were worried about Real Madrid’s interest in the £35 million star, which could see them lean towards deciding on a profitable exit now rather than losing him for nothing in 2026.

Real Madrid are interested in Ibrahima Konate

Real Madrid had abandoned plans to sign Konate, as they did with Arsenal’s William Saliba, owing to the potential asking price those clubs would demand. As for the Liverpool defender, Los Blancos could still be interested should they find a reasonable way to get the defender, as they are still in the market for a new centre-back despite signing Deean Huijsen.

Liverpool do face a scare with regards to Ibrahima Konate’s Real Madrid links, as the Spanish giants are probably in the mood to lure him on a free transfer next season. While the Merseysiders are likely to open their doors for a sale this summer without a new contract, Real Madrid are unlikely to pay big fees considering they can get him on a free next summer.
