Crystal Palace and Leeds United handed blow in Japhet Tanganga pursuit
Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Leeds United are set for disappointments in their chase of Japhet Tanganga, with the defender preferring a European switch.
According to Reluctant Nicko on Patreon, Japhet Tanganga is set to reject the idea of making a return to the Premier League. The 26-year-old Championship defender is keen on a switch to a European club thus handing a blow to the likes of Crystal Palace and Leeds United in their pursuit of the Milwall star.
Japhet Tanganga did not particularly make it big while at Tottenham despite a promising start to his career after coming through their academy. He has been on loan deals on a few occasions, and the move to Millwall proved to be his calling as the Championship side made the move permanent.
Interestingly his contract has a modest £1.2 million release clause, and after a terrific season in the Championship, a host of clubs are eager to explore a move for the defender. At 26, Tanganga still has a lot of years left in him, as his displays in the Championships have ensured Premier League sides are considering him as an option.
Crystal Palace are at the forefront of this chase, as they are expected to lose Marc Guehi to a bigger club this summer. Many defensive targets are being linked with the Eagles, including former on-loan star Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea, as they also considered Tanganga as a potential option to replace their skipper.
Newly promoted side Leeds United as well as fellow newcomers Sunderland and Burnley explored the idea of signing Tanganga, especially due to his modest release clause. Leeds in particular are eager to bring him as an additional option especially because he has decent experience of the top flight.
Japhet Tanganga wants European move
Tanganga has no intention of staying in England, even if there’s interest from the Premier League. He seemingly has many offers on the table, as he angles a move to either Germany or France. The decision will be a bitter blow to the chances of Crystal Palace and Leeds United who had hoped to sign the 26-year-old Championship defender.
It may have been the price point that could be the most attractive temptation for those Premier League sides in pursuit of the 26-year-old Championship defender. However, the situation might be open for the time being, although Tanganga seems eager to make a move to one of the continental clubs over those in England.
