Manchester City, Newcastle United make move for Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Manchester City and Newcastle United have enquired about the availability of Barcelona shot-stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

According to a report from Fichajes, Marc-Andre ter Stegen could be heading to the Premier League this summer as Manchester City and Newcastle United are both keen on his signature. The English clubs have already knocked on Barcelona’s door to learn more about a potential transfer.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen came up the ranks at Borussia Monchengladbach and made a name for himself while playing for their first team before joining Barcelona in the summer of 2024. Over the years, he has been an integral part of their team and has been one of their standout performers.

While the German international was an undisputed starter for the Catalan giants until the 2023/24 season, a lot has changed since. The 33-year-old Barcelona skipper suffered a serious injury quite early in the season and was sidelined for the majority of the campaign.

Hansi Flick was forced to look for a new goalkeeper, and they ended up convincing Wojciech Szczesny to come out on retirement. While his contract runs out in a few weeks, the Spanish giants are more than happy to hand him a new one-year deal on the back of his performances.

More importantly, they have already made a massive signing for the future. Espanyol shot-stopper Joan Garcia is all set to join the Catalan club. With Garcia joining them and Szczesny likely to continue, Marc-Andre ter Stegen might not be an undisputed starter.

English clubs to battle for Ter Stegen

As a result, multiple top clubs are closely monitoring his situation, and they could pounce on any opportunity to sign him. Manchester City and Newcastle United are two clubs that are keen on his signature and have already intensified their efforts to sign him.

With Ederson struggling with fitness and his future uncertain amidst interest from the Middle East, Pep Guardiola is looking at the German international as an ideal replacement. He wanted to sign him back in 2016. While it did not work out back then, the Spanish manager can certainly try his luck again this summer.

The 33-year-old still has a few years left, and he could prove to be a valuable addition. Meanwhile, Newcastle are looking to further bolster their squad having secured a return to the Champions League. Signing the German international could be a massive statement of intent from their end. He could help them take the next step forward and he will certainly be an upgrade on their current options.
