Daniel Levy ready to extend Cristian Romero contract at Tottenham

Daniel Levy wants to extend Cristian Romero’s contract amid heavy interest from Atletico Madrid ahead of the summer window.

According to Marca via Sport Witness, Daniel Levy is working to persuade Cristian Romero to stay put and sign a new deal with Tottenham. The Argentine World Cup winner is attracting big interest from Atletico Madrid, as the defender might be keen to make the switch.

Tottenham are in a precarious position to retain the services of Cristian Romero, with the defender in danger of leaving the Europa League holders. Winning the second-tier European competition does allow Spurs an entry into next season’s Champions League, which does give them a strong hand in persuading the Argentine World Cup winner to stay.

Spurs are desperate to persuade Romero to stay put, as Daniel Levy is reportedly keen to hand him a new deal with an improved salary. The Tottenham supremo had already placed a €70 million price tag amid previous interest from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

It’s the latter that is pushing hard to get the €70 million-rated Tottenham star, as Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil is set for talks with Levy for Romero. Whether those conversations turn into something fruitful remains to be seen, as Levy will be pushing to keep the World Cup winner in his team.

The presence of Champions League football could be key in conversations between Levy and Romero, as there’s still a chance to keep hold of the defender. However, the final decision might be that of the defender, who will enter the final two years of his deal, which does represent the best time for Tottenham to make the sale.

Cristian Romero wants Atletico Madrid move

Romero was looking to push for an exit, and in that scenario, Spurs may have little choice but to sell the defender. For now, there are no official approaches on the table, although that could change in the coming period. He certainly is keen to play under Diego Simeone, meaning there’s a likelihood that the Argentine will be donning the colours of Atletico Madrid next season.

It remains to be seen if Atletico Madrid can persuade Levy to ask for a reasonable price, as €70 million might seem high for the player after the season Spurs have had last season. Overall, Romero is leaning towards a switch to Spain, as this is a transfer saga that has the potential to drag on all summer.
