Wolverhampton Wanderers eyeing Gerard Martin swoop

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in signing 23-year-old Spanish defender Gerard Martin from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

According to an update by reputed Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto, Gerard Martin is the subject of interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Black Country outfit will dip into the market for a left-back in the summer transfer window as they prepare to part ways with Rayan Ait-Nouri.

The Algerian international is on the cusp of joining Manchester City, with the Premier League giants hoping to seal the deal before they embark on the trip to the United States for the FIFA Club World Cup. So, the 23-year-old Barcelona full-back has emerged as a target for Wolverhampton Wanderers, and the youngster can be Ait-Nouri’s long-term replacement.

Gerard Martin and his Barcelona breakthrough

Gerard Martin is the latest highly-rated prospect to break into the first-team squad at FC Barcelona. A native of Barcelona, the Spaniard spent his formative years in his homeland, passing through the academies at EF Performance, Sant Gabriel, and UE Cornella. However, the young full-back earned his stripes after joining the Blaugrana in July 2023.

The 23-year-old full-back enjoyed his breakthrough in the first-team squad at the Catalan club in the 2024/25 season, and he turned out nearly 50 times for the senior side while chipping in with one goal and six assists. Meanwhile, Martin’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs, including Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Premier League move on the horizon?

The Black Country club’s interest in Gerard Martin is understandable. Wolverhampton Wanderers are combing the market for a new left-back as they prepare for life after Rayan Ait-Nouri. With the Algerian international on the verge of joining Manchester City, Vitor Pereira wants a long-term replacement.

So, Martin has emerged as a viable target for Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, the update by Matteo Moretto does not reveal any more details than talking about the Premier League club’s interest in the 23-year-old Spaniard. Meanwhile, they are also scouring the market to replace other star players.

Leicester City playmaker Bilal El Khannouss has emerged as the top target to replace Matheus Cunha. Wolverhampton Wanderers are also eager to bolster other positions in the summer transfer window. As for Martin, it will be interesting to see if the Spanish full-back trades Barcelona for Wolverhampton in the coming weeks.
