Martin Keown tells Manchester United to replace Ruben Amorim with Jurgen Klopp

Martin Keown has thrown in an improbable idea of replacing Ruben Amorim with 57-year-old former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Manchester United are acting strongly in the transfer market with talk of some important moves in the pipeline. Matheus Cunha has already arrived from Wolves in a £62.5 million deal, while there is concrete interest in Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo as things stand.

Moreover, there is news that Bruno Fernandes has rejected an offer from Al-Hilal, meaning he is now expected to skipper the side heading into the new season. There are some more key additions expected at the club in the summer, as Ruben Amorim looks to build a squad as per his specifications.

The Portuguese manager has not had the best of starts, losing 17 of the 42 games he has managed so far at Manchester United across all competitions. A chunk of those victories came in the Europa League, where he took this team to the final only to lose against Tottenham.

The season has been deemed as a big failure, particularly in the Premier League, where Amorim has lost 14 of the 27 games he managed. He only had seven wins in that period, and despite the poor results, the manager had the club’s backing.

Amorim was not expected to be sacked based on the Europa League Final result. That has been the case despite links to some high-profile names, such as Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi and former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri.

Yet, many continue to doubt his presence in the dugout, as a section of the fanbase already feels the Portuguese boss is not the right fit. In theory, Amorim could get the right amount of time to build a competitive squad, and if results continue to evade, then the club might re-think their stance on the Portuguese boss.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown on talkSPORT has now made an absurd suggestion to replace Amorim. His ideal choice is 57-year-old former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, which feels like an improbable idea given the animosity between the two clubs.

Keown said, “I’m still concerned that maybe this isn’t the right manager for Manchester United, Just look at the number of games they’ve lost. It’s going to be a very interesting start to next season for them but they could do a lot worse than go and get Jurgen Klopp to manage their football club.”

“I’m not trying to sensationalise. I believe he could do an incredible job there and I believe they need somebody with more experience than the current manager.”

Klopp is widely considered a world-class football manager for his work with Borussia Dortmund and most notably Liverpool. He spent nine years at Merseyside, moulding an average team into regular challengers for the Premier League and Champions League crowns.

He won both those titles once during his spell at Anfield and given how he is adored by the Liverpool fans, he is unlikely to disturb the peace and join Manchester United. When he left Liverpool last summer, there was a feeling that out of respect the 57-year-old may not take up another position within the English top flight, let alone Manchester United.
