Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United in transfer tussle to sign Facundo Medina, player has agreement to leave RC Lens

Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing 25-year-old Argentina international Facundo Medina from Ligue 1 club RC Lens.

According to a report by French outlet Allez Lens, Facundo Medina has an agreement with RC Lens to seal a permanent move away from Stade Bollaert-Delelis in the summer transfer window. Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United are keen on signing the Lens centre-back, with the Ligue 1 club demanding €30 million to part ways with the Argentine international.

Facundo Medina and his journey at RC Lens

Facundo Medina has established himself as one of the most dependable defenders in Ligue 1 since joining RC Lens from CA Talleres in July 2020. A native of Villa Fiorito, the South American defender spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the youth division at River Plate.

However, the 25-year-old has risen in prominence since moving to Europe, coming leaps and bounds in the last half a decade. Medina has turned out over 150 times thus far for RC Lens while chipping in with eight goals and ten assists. Meanwhile, the player’s progress has not gone unnoticed, alerting several well-known clubs, including Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United.

A man in demand

Aston Villa will dip into the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window. The West Midlands club might not seal a permanent deal for Axel Disasi after his loan spell ends. In addition, Tyrone Mings is on the wrong side of 30. So, Medina has emerged as a viable target for Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace’s interest in Facundo Medina is understandable. The central defensive unit has lacked a reliable option since Trevoh Chalobah returned to Chelsea from his loan stint in the winter transfer window. In addition, Marc Guehi might depart from Selhurst Park this summer amid his links with Premier League bigwigs. So, the Argentine international is an option worth considering for Crystal Palace.

As for Newcastle United, Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, and Dan Burn are on the wrong side of 30. In addition, the Lloyd Kelly transfer did not work, and Newcastle United must dip into the market for a new centre-back. So, Medina is a viable target for the Tyneside outfit. Meanwhile, the 25-year-old has an agreement with RC Lens to embark on a new adventure in the summer transfer window.

The Ligue 1 club will demand around €30 million to part ways with the Argentine international. The valuation is fair, considering Medina’s age profile and potential. However, it is unclear if Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United are open to coughing up €30 million to secure his services.
