Bayer Leverkusen considering Erik ten Hag, Xavi moves
Bayer Leverkusen are considering Erik ten Hag and Xavi as potential replacements for Xabi Alonso, who could end up joining Real Madrid.
According to a report from Kicker, Bayer Leverkusen have already started looking for a new manager as Xabi Alonso could be on his way out of late. Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and ex-Barcelona manager Xavi are both on the German club’s shortlist as potential replacements.
Alonso has done wonders for Leverkusen since taking charge towards the end of 2022. He has helped them reach new heights as he guided them to the league title last season. Not only did they end Bayern Munich’s dominance, they were unbeaten throughout the campaign and even won the DFB-Pokal.
While his contract at Leverkusen runs until the summer of 2026, he looks set to secure a move to Real Madrid this summer. Los Blancos are ready to part ways with Carlo Ancelotti after a disappointing campaign and Alonso is expected to replace him on the Spanish club’s bench.
He already has a gentleman’s agreement with the German club that allows him to join one of his former clubs without any trouble. Since his departure looks almost certain, Leverkusen have already been working to identify a potential successor and they have two big names on their shortlist.
Leverkusen eye Xavi & Ten Hag as Alonso replacements
The first name on the list is former Barcelona manager Xavi. The Spanish midfield legend enjoyed a successful spell at the Catalan club, both as a player and later as head coach. He was in charge from November 2021 until 2024, guiding the team through one of their most difficult periods.
He helped them win the La Liga title as well as the Spanish Super Cup. He is a strong advocate of possession-based football, and his tactical philosophy aligns well with what Leverkusen are seeking in their next manager. They have enquired about him and haven’t received any negative response.
Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is also on their shortlist. While his time at Old Trafford didn’t really go according to plan, he did have a bit of success and more importantly, he had an impressive spell at Ajax back in the day.
Ten Hag speaks German which does give him an edge and he even has some coaching experience in that part of the world having managed the Bayern Munich reserve team. He is said to be their priority target at this stage.
