Atletico Madrid could offer Rodrigo Riquelme in deal to sign Cristian Romero

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly willing to offer Rodrigo Riquelme in the deal to sign 27-year-old Tottenham defensive mainstay Cristian Romero this summer.

According to a report by MARCA, as relayed by Sport Witness, Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Riquelme may swap clubs in the summer transfer window. The Tottenham defensive mainstay is the subject of interest from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, with Los Rojiblancos ready to offer the Spanish winger in the deal to secure his services in the summer transfer window.

Cristian Romero and his Tottenham travels

Cristian Romero has gone from strength to strength since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Atalanta in 2021. While the Argentine international has struggled with fitness issues this season, he has been a standout performer throughout his spell with the North London club.

The 27-year-old has turned out 121 times thus far for Tottenham while chipping in with seven goals and two assists. However, Romero faces an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium heading into the summer transfer window amid his emerging links with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.

However, recent reports have claimed that the Colchoneros have fallen short of Tottenham’s asking price for the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner. So, Atletico Madrid might have an ace up their sleeves, as they plan to use Rodrigo Riquelme in the deal to sign Cristian Romero in the summer transfer window.

La Liga adventure beckons?

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Cristian Romero is understandable. The Colchoneros are scouring the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties around Clement Lenglet’s long-term future. In addition, Axel Witsel is in the twilight of his career, while Cesar Azpilicueta will likely depart from Estadio Metropolitano in the coming months.

So, Romero has emerged as a viable target for Atletico Madrid, with the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner keen on embarking on an adventure in La Liga. The prospect of using Rodrigo Riquelme in the deal to sign Romero makes sense, as Atletico Madrid can drive down Tottenham’s price while helping the Lilywhites bolster their offensive unit.

With Richarlison on the chopping block, Tottenham will dip into the market for a versatile attacker, with recent reports linking them with Marcus Rashford. However, landing Riquelme in the deal to sell Cristian Romero might serve the North London club well.
