Aston Villa in transfer tussle to sign Djordje Petrovic
Aston Villa will compete with Bayer Leverkusen and Juventus to sign 25-year-old Serbian international Djordje Petrovic from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Football Insider, Djordje Petrovic is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans are combing the market for a goalkeeper heading into the summer transfer window and have set their sights on the Chelsea misfit. However, they are in a three-way battle to land the 25-year-old shot-stopper, with Bayer Leverkusen and Juventus also keen on signing him.
Djordje Petrovic and his struggles at Chelsea
Djordje Petrovic has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Chelsea from New England Revolution in August 2023. The Serb is one of several promising players to suffer from the West London club’s hoarding policy, with the Premier League outfit signing over half a dozen goalkeepers in the last three years.
The 25-year-old was in and out of the starting lineup in his debut season with Chelsea before the West London outfit loaned him to sister club RC Strasbourg last summer. Petrovic has made his mark in Ligue 1, keeping ten clean sheets in 27 French top-flight outings, including seven in his last ten games.
Meanwhile, Petrovic will be at a crossroads in his career again this summer as he has no future at Chelsea. While the Serbian international hoped to extend his Chelsea career despite embarking on a loan spell with RC Strasbourg, a summer departure is likely. Aston Villa might hand him an escape route in the upcoming transfer window.
Move across the Premier League on the cards?
Aston Villa’s interest in Djordje Petrovic is understandable. While Emiliano Martinez has been excellent for the West London club since arriving from Arsenal a few years ago, he is on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the twilight of his career. In addition, Robin Olsen will likely depart from Villa Park in the summer transfer window.
So, Aston Villa can do with a new goalkeeper, with Petrovic emerging as a viable target for the Villans. However, they face stiff competition from Bayer Leverkusen and Juventus for the 25-year-old Serb amid uncertainties surrounding his Chelsea future.
Recent reports have also linked Petrovic with Leeds United. So, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the Serbian international as he closes in on leaving Chelsea only two years after arriving at Stamford Bridge.
