PSG set to go all out to sign Ibrahima Konate

Paris Saint-Germain are willing to do everything in their power to sign Liverpool defensive mainstay Ibrahima Konate.

According to a report from Anfield Watch, PSG are keen on reinforcing their backline ahead of next season, and they have their eyes set on Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate. With his contract at the English club running out in just over a year, the French club are looking to exploit the situation.

Konate made a name for himself at RB Leipzig before making the move to Liverpool in the summer of 2021. He has only gone from strength to strength over the years and has established himself as a key figure in the Merseyside club.

He has been the preferred choice at the back alongside skipper Virgil van Dijk for Arne Slot. The 25-year-old has featured in a total of 37 matches and has even contributed towards four goals. His consistent performances at the heart of the defence have put him on the radar of PSG.

The French giants will be looking at the market for a new centre-back in the summer as the future of Marquinhos is up in the air. He could end up leaving the Ligue 1 giant after 12 long years, which could open up space for a first-choice defender, and PSG are looking at Konate as an ideal fit for their system.

He could end up being an important part of their plans moving ahead, and they are willing to go all out to sign him this summer. They are hoping to persuade Konate to move back to Paris, his home.

Liverpool could struggle to keep Konate

Liverpool are under a lot of pressure with regard to his future as his contract at the club runs until 2026. While they have been working on a renewal, they haven’t made any significant progress. The 25-year-old wants a massive £200k per week contract, which is complicating the situation.

The Reds can’t really afford to pay him that big a fee, having finalised massive contracts to secure the future of Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk. They will also look to sign some top players in the summer, which will have an impact on the wage bill. As a result, they want to negotiate a lower wage with the French international.

Since Konate will only have 12 months left on his deal in the summer, it could represent Liverpool’s final opportunity to earn a decent fee from his departure. They might not want to risk losing out on him for free in 2026.

PSG are well aware of the situation and are looking to make the most out of it. With Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah’s futures also up in the air, the Merseyside club have plenty to sort out this summer when it comes to reinforcing their backline.
