Predicted Manchester United lineup against Manchester City: Maguire in for de Ligt; Mount set to start
Harry Maguire and Mason Mount will return to the Manchester United starting lineup against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Manchester United will aim to return to winning ways when they welcome Manchester City to Old Trafford on Sunday evening. Ruben Amorim has a new injury concern to worry about ahead of his side’s latest fixture.
Matthijs de Ligt is the latest absentee after picking up a knock earlier this week against Forest. The Dutch defender has joined Lisandro Martínez (knee), Ayden Heaven (ankle), Luke Shaw (calf), Jonny Evans (back), and Amad Diallo (ankle) on the sidelines.
However, there is some hope for good news, as Kobbie Mainoo might be fit and available to sit on the bench this weekend. Meanwhile, during his pre-match press conference, Amorim provided a fitness update on several players, including de Ligt, Mainoo, and Mount.
The Manchester United manager said, “Yes, he [Mount] can start, but we have to manage his minutes still. I think Kobbie is returning to training, so we’ll see and assess for this game already. Of course, he cannot play a full game, he’s a long time without training.”
Providing a fitness update on de Ligt, Amorim said, “I think Matta [de Ligt] has an issue. He has something during the game [at Forest] and we have to assess. I think the rest is normal.”
Andre Onana will take his spot between the sticks, with Manchester United lining up in a 3-4-2-1 formation in front of him against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday. Harry Maguire will replace de Ligt in the central defensive unit, joining Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui at the back.
Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu are automatic picks as the wing-backs, with Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte likely to pair up in the middle of the park. Bruno Fernandes’s spot as a central midfielder means Mason Mount should play the advanced midfield role, with the English playmaker joining Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund in the final third.
Predicted Manchester United XI: Onana; Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro; Dalot, Ugarte, Fernandes, Dorgu; Mount, Garnacho; Hojlund
